Thanks to Dave, EI2HPB for emailing me and describing his proposed antenna. What a great antenna taking up 70% of the space that a half wave dipole would. I suppose you could try it horizontal as well . I can get the Xeigu g90 to tune both 12 and 17m on the 40-10 m EFHW and had decent results despite it not being one of the harmonic bands .

Regarding the impedance of the coil, the maximum is obviously where no extra bit of wire is needed - but what about the minimum, how much is the minimum you need to choke off the 12m part of the antenna? How does it cut off, is there a sharp cut off between the 12m bit being choked and not being choked or is there a gradual increase as the inductance increases?

As a QRP operator, I love 17 meters ! Its one of my favourites for making telephony contacts on <10 Watts. I really like your design, I only wish I had more time for both radio and building antennas, it looks super simple and something that even I couldnt mess up :D Could you make a video of you operating with the antenna please tim, i'd be very interested to see how well it does.

Isn't it more efficient to use the collapsable telescopic whip (5 meters long maximum) on 17 and 12 meters (collapsing it on 12 meters)? I use it with a mag-mount on the top of the car (where the car body serves as a counterpoise). This setup needs no transformer (i.e. it avoids losses in the transformer).

As it happens i have an Am-pro 20m mobile whip antenna in my cupboard. Its the black fibreglass spiral wound one with the top metal adjustable whip section and 3/8th mount. Last time i was active i remember some very good results mobile from high ground. I also used it on a mag mount though im not sure if there was a fair bit of stray RF hanging around. I'm just wondering if it would benefit from putting it on a pole with a bracket and maybe a balun and a radial or two rather than a magmount??

Hi Tim, i just recently discovered your channel so have only viewed a few vids but i just have to say how brilliant they are and what a great presenter you are. An easy listen :) I'm a G0 but havent been active for years mostly due to life getting in the way and moving house years back. I just had my TS850S serviced and overhauled and im keen to get back on the air. A lot of people think you need big bucks and big money for HF antennas and of course size can be an issue if you are short of real estate like me. But as youve clearly demonstrated, all you need is a pole and some bits of wire . You have inspired me. Id really like you to show things like the types of poles you use, how they assemble and lock together, also power sources. Obvs my 850 isnt ideal for mobile but its what i have right now. Can you explore power sources, eg ideal batteries for powering 100w HF etc.. Thanks again for yyour great contact TIM. Your enthusiasm shines through ...

Well, excellent, a great look at exactly what I'm planning to do! So many thanks to you Tim G5TM, and thanks also to Ric DJ0IP for his very good article on a vertical doublet. I currently have a horizontal 20m doublet, fed with open wire constructed ladder line, which I have been very pleased with, though I must confess I haven't done much HF since getting licensed, having done much more on 2m. But I had put a lot of thought into my existing doublet, including modelling and careful choice of a 1:1 current balun. I've just got back into radio recently, including the HF side of things. But a failed attempt to join in with a local 80m net made me realise I was probably trying to receive a vertically polarised ground wave on a horizontal antenna. So rightly or wrongly I'm going to try transforming my 20m horizontal doublet into a 12m vertical doublet and see how it goes. I had already settled on a 12m Spiderbeam pole, and I'll be re-using my ATU, balun and ladder line etc. In the future I can always revert, or even have both, but the vertical may well be all I need. I'll probably be foregoing 80m, but 40m and up I think will be fine. We'll see... Thanks again for the video.
